On clear, cold nights in the north the skies can come to life with dazzling green lights. Seen as dancing vails, lazer beams or subtile mists the northern lights – Aurora Borealis – is a true wonder of mother nature.
The lights occur when the earths magnetic field pulls articles up in the atmosphere towards the north pole. Or more specifically – it is the result of collisions between gaseous particles in the Earth's atmosphere with charged particles released from the sun's atmosphere.Whatever it is, you wouldn’t want to miss it! Åre is a great place to look for the northern lights. Best is to get away a bit from the artificial lights of the ski slopes and Åre village. Go by snowmobile or snowshoes, bring something warm to drink and a tasty snack. Sit by a fire, close to your friends and wait for it to happen. For a better chance of seeing it use a local guide. You will then be taken to the best spot for the evening, they bring snacks and hot drinks and you can just concentrate on enjoying yourself. Make sure you bring your camera, with a little luck the evening could result in visual displays hard to explane without pictures to proove it.
