Summer activities


Summer

If you would like to experience the quiet side of Åre you can take the cable car up the mountain to enjoy the views or hike one of the many trails on or around Mt. Åre Skutan, go canoeing on the lake, swim, play a round of golf, try your luck at fishing or go on a horse trek.

If you are looking for more action you can try activities such as downhill biking from the top of the mountain, Zipline and fly through the air above the treetops, or white water rafting.

Visit Holiday Club, the big hotel on the waterfront which offers a range of indoor activities.

Mountain Biking

Åre Bike Park offers fantastic downhill mountain biking. There are lots of lifts to take you and your bike up the mountain including the cable car which can take you to the very top. Trials down suit all levels from beginners to experts. There are also lots of beautiful scenic trails in the Åre region for cross country mountain biking. There are a number of companies in the village which rent out both cross country and downhill bikes as well as helmets and protective clothing.

 

Hiking

If you are interested in hiking then Åre is the perfect destination for you. There are great hiking trails for all ages and levels. You can choose from hikes which start right in the heart of the village and take you up the mountain or along the valley. All trails are well marked and sign posted and you can pick up your free hiking maps from the Tourist Bureau so you can’t possibly get lost. Just west of Åre is one of Sweden’s most popular hiking regions – Storulvån.

 

Swimming

In warm weather swimming in the mountain lakes and streams is a popular activity. There is a great beach on the Åre lake front and there are several other lakes in the region suitable for swimming. There are also lots of babbling mountain streams with great swimming holes. Try out the natural water slides in Ullådalen.

 

Fishing

Åre is an angler’s paradise. The long summer nights allow for fishing around the clock. Åre has everything from fast flowing rivers to mountain lakes which have healthy trout stocks. Fish for grayling and arctic char as well. Fishing licences are not expensive and the local residents are often generous with advice.

 

Holiday Club

Holiday Club has a wide range of indoor activities for the whole family such as their indoor/outdoor adventure water world, Sauna World, ten pin bowling, adventure mini golf, a golf simulator, foosball, supervised indoor activities for the kids (LAB), and of course their in-house spa.

 

Millest Moose Farm

Come and meet the king of the forest at Millest Moose Farm. Just west of Duved you can feed, pat and even kiss tame moose.

 

Golf

Åre golf course is just a few minutes drive west of Åre and has a fantastic 18 hole course with amazing scenery of the surrounding mountains. A round of golf late one late summer night will be an experience hard to forget.

 

Zipline

Experience flying among the treetops at speeds of up to 70km/hr attached to a wire. Zipline is an adrenaline filled experience for everyone from 8 years old. There are two levels you can choose from and the friendly guides also inform you on the local flora and fauna.

 

The Cable Car

The cable car in Åre is open all summer and takes you almost to the top of Mt. Åre Skutan. There are amazing views from up there and the restaurant is open for lunches and snacks. If you are in the mood for a walk you can continue up to the summit and have a cup on coffee in the tiny café up there. You can choose between walking back down to the village or catching a ride with the cable car.

 

Horseback Riding

There are several companies in the Åre region offering horse treks. You can go on anything from a half-day trek to one lasting several days. Most stables have Iceland ponies, known for their reliability and friendliness.


White Water Rafting

If you are looking for a bit of adventure try white water rafting on the Indalsalven River. Experienced guides can give you a great day out riding the rapids and eating lunch in the great outdoors.


Njarka Sami Village

Experience traditional Sami village life by visiting Njarka Sami Village, just west of Duved. You can even stay the night in modern cabins or traditional tents. Children are especially welcome and there are lots of activities for everyone.

 

Fröå Copper Mine

Visit Fröå Copper Mine and take one of their guided tours and listen to old mining stories. Enjoy a snack or meal in their summer café or take a picnic with you and explore the old mining village.

 

Tännforsen Falls

A trip to Tännforsen Falls just west of Duved can only be recommended. Apart from the incredible waterfall which is one of Sweden’s biggest, the walk through the forest there is full of signs with information about the local flora and fauna. Tännforsen also has a restaurant and souvenir shop.


 

Winter activities


Winter

If you are looking for action you can try activities such as Zipline and fly through the air above the treetops, book a snowmobile tour and there is always the main attraction of alpine skiing and snowboarding in Åre – northern Europe's biggest ski resort.

If you would like to experience the quiet side of Åre you can take your cross country skis and ski one of the many prepared tracks in the area. You can book a dog sledding tour or visit the moose farm in Duved or why not spend a day in the sun on one of the many frozen lakes in the area and try your luck at ice fishing?

Alpine Skiing and Snowboarding

There is skiing suitable for everyone in Åre, whatever your age or level. Åre’s location makes it a snow-secure destination. The season lasts for about 6 months, usually starting in November and ending in early May. Enjoy both expertly prepared slopes and steep off piste skiing. Take it easy in Duved, have the ski holiday of your life in Åre or enjoy all the activities available to you and the kids in Björnen.

 

Cross Country Skiing

There are great prepared cross country trails in Åre. The best cross country skiing in Åre can be found in Duved and Åre Björnen. Tracks vary from 2.5 – 15 km in length and both areas have tracks which are lit until 10pm. If you decide to go to Duved, try out their new ski cross course. A physically and technically demanding 405m long lit track designed for fun free style cross country skiing.


Snow Mobiling

Go on a snow mobile safari and have the time of your life. You can go on trips from 2 hours to several days. Have a snowmobile each or share with a friend. There are several companies which organise snowmobile safaris in Åre.

Ice Fishing

Ice fishing is a popular activity in the spring-winter. Spend the day out on the ice in the sun and try your luck! You may be eating fresh arctic char or trout for dinner tonight! Licences are not expensive and equipment can be bought or rented.


Dog Sledding

Whiz across the frozen wilderness comfortably seated on reindeer hides with only the sound of the sled’s runners and the panting of dogs in your ears. Choose between dog sledding tours that last from half a day to several days when you stay in mountain huts.


Ski Touring

West Jämtland has a large number of great ski touring routes. Sweden’s most popular ski touring area, Storulvån, is less than an hour away from Åre by car, bus or train. There is a well developed network of mountain stations and huts you can ski between and both equipment and guides are easily hired.

Tännforsen Falls

A trip to Tännforsen Falls just west of Duved can only be recommended. Apart from the breathtaking waterfall which is an amazing sight in the winter in its half frozen state, you should visit the igloo which is built up each winter and has rooms you can stay the night in and a concert hall. Tännforsen also has a restaurant and souvenir shop.
